I don’t follow how the article is controversial. The Justice Department investigated and published their results of said investigation. It’s not like they said vaccines cause autism, or that Donald Trump is actually running a false flag campaign for Hillary Clinton. For many that live in and around Baltimore the investigation just confirmed something we already knew.

ETA: Don’t forget to use the dismiss and flag options, even if you feel it’s warranted for my comment.

Cops need much better training and have to rethink escalation and body cameras will hopefully do a great deal in helping that. If a cop NEEDS to shoot someone especially if they are armed or about to do severe harm the video will prove that.

A video released a couple of weeks ago showed cops shooting a person who happened to be black but the video showed them removing a revolver from his hands it was plain as can see. There was no cut in the video for a gun to be planted or anything crazy like that.

The problem is, cops rile each other up once one of them pulls out their service weapon. When someone pulls out a gun whether it’s a good guy or a bad guy everyone’s adrenaline starts pumping.

Like the video of the black guy with the autistic man in which the guy is laying on his back yet cops not even 50 FT away are aiming assault rifles at him and the autistic guy. Cops take a situation that anyone in the military can resolve tactically and escalate it, anyone with a pair of binoculars (they have tons of ex-military equipment but not $20 binocs?) could see the autistic guy had a toy truck in his hand and not a gun as it was reported to 911, seeing that there was no threat.

Instead they take cover and all pull out assault rifles which makes all the other cops think this situation is now life or death and that they are all at risk of getting killed so with their adrenaline pumping they all are screaming with their guns drawn, not a clear minded person in the group. Oh and they shot the black guy, while he was on his back, after explaining the autistic guy had a toy in his hand.

Also the whole stat system needs a revamp. In NYC they use CompStat which adds [highly manipulated] metrics for arrests and crimes etc. is there is no metric for “situations peacefully resolved” there is no way to quantify this and there should be. This whole “quota” system forces cops to escalate situations in the name of meeting their quotas, if they don’t meet the quotas their superiors start doing shit like taking away time off and even moving police to precincts wayyyyyyy far away as punishment or making them work back to back shifts when they weren’t scheduled to do so all in the name of punishment. City hall also views cops as revenue generating robots forcing them to again go hard and meet quotas by any means they can. I would GLADLY pay more in taxes if it meant doing away with these stupid quotas which are met through unconstitutional tactics like stop and frisk.

I was mostly trying to avoid the shitstorm from the Michael Brown article yesterday. What you said about the article is true, but I didn’t want to get into a 200 comment long rant with people from the internet because they found something to be offended by in the truth.

I’m slightly confused as to why this is even controversial, the DOJ issued this report. Done.

This is current events 101, and anyone who says otherwise is looking to make the present the past without first correcting it, which just dooms them to inevitably repeat the mistakes that came before it.

What will be newsworthy will be how endemic this is when they do the same thing in more municipalities.

I guess it isn’t really controversial, but see my reply to Party-Vi above; I didn’t want to stir shit on Oppo and get into a firestorm/brawl like the Michael Brown post yesterday, so I put as many warnings as possible.

The good news: this can be presented as evidence that it's not WHITE cops/people doing the dirty work, but just cops/people in general (in Baltimore, at least).

There’s a live report on that same channel playing right now of how, according to the DOJ, civil rights of drivers of color, were in fact violated, but I can’t get it to post (I think my computer is slow today; even the Olympic tennis is on rain delay).

Sadly, it’s more depressing than controversial. But thank you for the warnings before the topic. It does help.

As an aside, beyond the post I wrote when the grand jury findings were announced in Ferguson, I also shared a really interesting post on racism, to oppo, a while ago, and did so with the following format... http://backtalk.kinja.com/the-racism-tha…

I’ve long held that oppo is a community in which debate and controversial topics are welcome, we just need to approach them from the perspective where we can have a respectful conversation. So, thanks again. It really does help. It’s not always necessary, and I wish it never were, but even so...

Maybe it’s that most people in positions of authority find it easiest to pick on the weakest members of society (weakest in terms of legal resources, socioeconomic means, etc). It's a bully mentality, and I think it just rears its head most clearly and frequently with police vs citizens. Treatment of illegal aliens has historically been the worst of all — which is easy because they don't have the means to fight back.

I really hope that reports like this help emphasize the need for additional training. And a lot of that is probably just meeting with people in the community that the police are working in. Establishing a rapport goes a long way to de-escalating situations. It helps “suspects” become “people.” I’m glad the Baltimore PD asked DOJ for this and I hope this is a postive step that encourages more PDs to do the same or at least rethink their tactics and attitudes.
